SOA Patterns – New Insights or Recycled Knowledge? Where did all my beatiful code go? Today’s applications rarely live in isolation. Users expect instant access to all functions, which may be provided by disparate applications and services, inside or outside the enterprise. Integrating applications and services remains more difficult than it should be, though: developers have to deal with asynchrony, partial failures, and incompatible data models. That’s why Bobby Woolf and I documented a pattern language consisting of 65 integration patterns to establish a technology-independent vocabulary and a visual notation to design and document integration solutions, ranging from connecting applications to a messaging system, routing messages to the proper destination, and monitoring the health of a messaging system.

The core language of EAI, defined by Gregor Hohpe and Bobby Woolf, is also the core language of defining ESB flows and orchestrations, as seen in the ESB’s developer tooling. As enterprise integration remains a relevant topic some 13 years after Enterprise Integration Patterns was published, digital transformation has become a major consideration for large enterprises: they are under pressure from so-called “digital disruptors” who attack unexpectedly with brand-new business models, operate free of legacy, and release enhanced products on a weekly basis. I collected my experience as chief architect into a book to help IT architects or CTOs combine superb technical, communication, and organizational skill to successfully drive IT transformation in large organizations. Work-in-progress: Conversation Patterns Asynchronous messaging is the foundation for most integration solution because its architectural style acknowledges the challenges of distributed communication, such as latency or partial failure. Architecting integration solutions is a complex task. There are many conflicting drivers and even more possible ‘right’ solutions.

Whether the architecture was in fact a good choice usually is not known until many months or even years later, when inevitable changes and additions put the original architecture to test. Unfortunately, there is no “cookbook” for enterprise integration solutions. Asynchronous Messaging Architectures Asynchronous messaging architectures have proven to be the best strategy for enterprise integration because they allow for a loosely coupled solution that overcomes the limitations of remote communication, such as latency and unreliability. That’s why most EAI suites and ESB’s are based on asynchronous messaging. Unfortunately, asynchronous messaging is not without pitfalls.

Each pattern tackles a specific problem by discussing design considerations and presenting an elegant solution that balances often conflicting forces. What am I Reading Right Now? Use the NETSTAT command in TSO to learn what ports are active. This pattern catalog describes 65 integration patterns, collected from many integration projects since 2002.

The patterns provide technology-independent design guidance for developers and architects to describe and develop robust integration solutions. The inspiration to document these patterns came when we struggled through multiple integration vendors’ product documentation just to realize later that many of the underlying concepts were quite similar. Enterprise integration is too complex to be solved with a simple ‘cookbook’ approach. If you have built integration solutions, it is likely that you have used some of these patterns, maybe in slight variations and maybe calling them by a different name. The purpose of this site is not to “invent” new approaches, but to present a coherent collection of relevant and proven patterns, which in total form an integration pattern language. The current patterns focus on Messaging, which forms the basis of most other integration patterns.

Integration Styles document different ways applications can be integrated, providing a historical account of integration technologies. All subsequent patterns follow the Messaging style. Channel Patterns describe how messages are transported across a Message Channel. These patterns are implemented by most commercial and open source messaging systems. Message Construction Patterns describe the intent, form and content of the messages that travel across the messaging system. The base pattern for this section is the Message pattern.

Routing Patterns discuss how messages are routed from a sender to the correct receiver. Message routing patterns consume a message from one channel and republish it message, usually without modification, to another channel based on a set of conditions. The patterns presented in this section are specializations of the Message Router pattern. Transformation Patterns change the content of a message, for example to accommodate different data formats used by the sending and the receiving system. Data may have to be added, taken away or existing data may have to be rearranged. The base pattern for this section is the Message Translator.

Endpoint Patterns describe how messaging system clients produce or consume messages. What Products Implement or Use Enterprise Integration Patterns? The patterns are not tied to a specific implementation. How Can You Use the Patterns? We want to encourage widespread use of the integration pattern language.

A summary of each pattern from the book is available on this site. You are also welcome to build on top of what we have done. In brief, this license allows you share, use and modify these passages as long as you give proper attribution. A number of open-source frameworks, such as Mule, Apache Camel, or Spring Integration incorporate our patterns. Now you can not only think in integration patterns, but also to code in them! Yet, the integration problems we have to solve every day remain frustratingly similar. Because the patterns encapsulate design knowledge, this knowledge does not age nearly as quickly as a specific technology.

On looking over my previous posts, I found no fewer than 25 of them that mentioned runstats. But I wanted to cover runstats in a different level of detail. Other RDBMS’s have a similar concept, but they may call it something slightly different. Runstats collects statistical information about the data in tables and indexes. You can view this information in views in the SYSSTAT schema. SYSCAT tables have some of the data as well.

There are a ton of options on the runstats command. Let’s look at my favorite syntax and what each part means. This tells DB2 to collect distribution statistics. DB2 notes the most frequent values. By default, the 10 most frequent values.

Using the above syntax, this is collected for every column. The default means that the optimizer should be able to estimate the number of values that would meet any one-sided predicate within 2. I recommend always collecting distribution statistics for e-commerce databases. Collecting index statistics helps DB2 decide which if any indexes to use to satisfy a particular query. 2 to properly estimate the cost of accessing a table through an index.

I recommend always collecting detailed index statistics for e-commerce databases. It looks for a certain percentage of data change and does runstats as needed. But you cannot easily tell it to use the syntax you prefer. That’s one reason that I don’t like to use it. Why Why do we gather all of this information? Especially when it can extend the time it takes to run runstats? DB2’s optimizer is very powerful, but its ability to choose the best access path is very heavily dependent on having current statistics.

If you call DB2 support on a query performance issue one of the very first questions they will ask is when the last runstats was and if it covered all tables. Ember is always curious and thrives on change. With in-depth SQL and RDBMS knowledge, Ember shares both posts about her core skill set and her journey into Data Science. I wanted to say, that if you want to control how the statistics are executed, you must probably use a profile, and then, the automatic maintenance will respect that profile. This is a good reason to activate the automatic runstats and still have the control, by configuring the statistic profiles. Automatic statistics collection respects the profile a user has specified by using the registered profile option in the SYSCAT. But I do have to set a profile for each individual table, right?

I can see that working, but as a control freak, I also want to know exactly when runstats happened across the board. Do I need to execute runstats for each table? Not even in version 10 is that option available. A direct quote from the 9.

The fully qualified name or alias in the form: schema. I don’t like that method of running runstats, so I don’t know the thresholds associated with it. Is there any tool or SQL stmt to know when to run runstats as we do with REORGCHK. The driving factor is often data change rates, but I don’t have a specific query to track that. DB2’s automated runstats facilities do make decisions based on data change rates. But I don’t use them because I’m a control freak and I want to know when the last runstats was. Also because the data I’m querying in an e-commerce database tends to be the most recently added data.

Personally I do runstats on all tables either daily or weekly depending on whether I’m in a build or post-go-live phase where data changes quickly or if I’m just in normal operation. This works well in e-commerce databases. I can see a point being made for different frequencies in different types of databases. Few tables have range partitioning with 1 to 5 billion rows. Can the optimizer use the statistics of the partition, if available, rather than the table statistics? First, you cannot do runstats on an individual index unless you are using range partitioning.

Second, no, that syntax does all indexes in addition to the table. Thanks Ember, how do you determine what columns currently have statistics collected on them. In DB2, we generally go with all columns. I don’t have the sql off the top of my head, but I think you’d be able to see if only specific columns have distribution stats by querying sysstat. A powerful strategy can also be to gather statistics on columns that are frequently queried together or joined on together and have correlations of some sort. So, how can you get started with MQTT-SN? The TC will accomplish this purpose through the refinement of an input specification.

The intention is to use the current MQTT v3. 1 specification as the input to the Technical Committee and incorporate clarifications that the community has been curating on the wiki. MQTT is a connectivity protocol designed for M2M. The Eclipse Paho project is the reference implementation for the MQTT protocol. After a couple of years in development, the popular fully Open Source MQTT broker, mosquitto by Roger Light, hit version 1. Apache ActiveMQ and Apollo, and the just-announced RabbitMQ adapter for MQTT. The latter is particularly exciting, as it offers interoperability between the AMQP and MQTT protocols. As there are a number of publically-accessible brokers now, we’ve made a list so that you can get testing with MQTT more quickly. Eclipse Paho and Eclipse M2M Portal The Eclipse Paho project is the primary home of the reference MQTT clients that started at IBM. Paho is a core project inside the Eclipse M2M Industry Working Group.

The Java and C clients are being cleaned up, there is a nice Eclipse view for testing, and a Lua client has been contributed, so progress is being made. Redbooks are very comprehensive and this one weighs in at 268 pages, available for free in PDF and Ebook formats. Much of what is discussed in the Google Group is used to clarify the specification and improve the wiki.
