Interacting with pharmaceutical companies has been a major part of EMA’s daily business since it began operating. These interactions are guided by a formal framework that rests on the principles of accountability, transparency and broad representation. For certain activities, EMA charges pharmaceutical companies administrative fees. The bulk of the income from fees is redistributed among European Member States who provide the scientific expertise for assessing regulatory applications. For more information, see Fees payable to the EMA. The dedicated SME office, established in 2005, addresses the specific needs of smaller pharmaceutical companies, with the aim of promoting innovation and development of new human and veterinary medicines.
EMA and report on the interaction. The framework takes account of the general principles for stakeholder consultation outlined in the European Commission’s staff working document on ‘Better Regulation Guidelines’, adopted in May 2015. EMA will undertake regular surveys to monitor the implementation of this framework and will publish a report on the progress of interacting with industry stakeholders annually. EMA publishes an annual report on its interactions with industry stakholders since 2015. For the 2015 report, see 2015 annual report. This allows them to receive information and notices of written consultations in selective areas of interest. To be more directly involved in Agency activities, industry stakeholders will need to be deemed eligible for engaging in consultative dialogue and cooperating with Agency in specific areas.

Inspections of the workplace Formal inspections can take different forms and you and your representatives will need to agree the best methods for your workplace. Here are some of the ways inspections can take place.

Incident inspections carried out after an accident causing a fatality, injury, or near miss, which could have resulted in an injury, or case of ill health and has been reported to the health and safety enforcing authority. Where a health and safety representative has drawn your attention to the findings of an inspection they have carried out, you should consider the matter and decide what appropriate follow-up action should be taken. Inspecting the workplace Union-appointed health and safety representatives can inspect the workplace. They have to give reasonable notice in writing when they intend to carry out a formal inspection of the workplace, and have not inspected it in the previous three months. If there is substantial change in conditions of work or HSE publishes new information on hazards, the representatives are entitled to carry out inspections before three months have elapsed, or if it is by agreement. The frequency of inspections will depend on the nature of the work. Inspections may be less often, for example, if the work environment is low risk like in a predominantly administrative office.
But if there are certain areas of a workplace or specific activities that are high risk or changing rapidly, more frequent inspection may be justified, for example on a construction project. Co-ordinate inspections – plan inspections if there is more than one representative, because they can then co-ordinate their inspections to avoid unnecessary duplication. Explain the reasons for any follow-up action you decide to take to your representatives. Let the representative who notified you of the inspection have the opportunity to inspect again so they can check if the issues raised got appropriate attention, and record their views. Share the follow-up action taken throughout the workplace and other relevant parts of the business, including the health and safety committee where there is one. There may be times when action may not be appropriate, you may not be able to act within a reasonable period of time, or when the action you take is not acceptable to your safety representatives. It is advisable to explain the reasons for the action you have decided to take in writing to your representatives.
You remain responsible for taking decisions about managing health and safety, but by explaining the reasons for actions and being open with your representatives, you can show that you have considered what they had to say. Research shows that children are more likely to succeed academically and are less likely to engage in violent behavior if their families are involved in their education. Many parents say, however, that they feel unwelcome or uncomfortable in their children’s schools. The following quote comes from Fathers’ Involvement in Their Children’s Schools, a report from the National Center for Education Statistics. However, Strong Families, Strong Schools, a report that reflects 30 years of research on family involvement in education, stated the sad fact that “in many instances parents don’t feel as if we welcome them in school. Be sure the first contact with parents is a positive one.
Communicate with parents straightforwardly and simply, avoiding educational “jargon. Ensure that all parents have regular access to clear, concise, and easily readable information about their children’s school and classroom. Ask parents to share their concerns and opinions about school, and then address those concerns. Encourage active parent participation in student learning. Establish regular, meaningful communication between home and school. Collaborate with parents to ensure that children have a supportive learning environment at school and at home. Welcome parents as advocates for their children as well as the school’s other students.
